El acuerdo está cerrado, aunque no se firmará y anunciará oficialmente hasta después de las elecciones presidenciales en la casa blanca. El Real Madrid, reciente subcampeón continental ante el Olympiacos, era el único de los 13 socios accionistas de la Euroliga que faltaba por rubricar su continuidad. El plazo para continuar en este grupo finalizaba el próximo 30 de junio. Asvel, Fenerbahçe y Madrid han sido los últimos en firmar. El acuerdo con el Real Madrid refuerza la posición de la Euroliga en las conversaciones que mantiene con la NBA para unir recursos de cara a una futura competición conjunta. La llegada del español Chus Bueno como CEO de la organización europea ha permitido reconstruir los puentes que hace unos meses parecían dinamitados entre las dos partes. La idea ahora es avanzar por el mismo camino, como explicó Bueno en la pasada Final Four celebrada en Atenas: "La fragmentación diluye el valor y crea fricción, y eso es malo para el negocio. Queremos maximizar esa oportunidad. Ya sea una asociación, una empresa conjunta, una fusión… Es lo que estamos hablando con la NBA. Si realmente queremos llevar a cabo este proyecto, deberíamos encontrar la solución. Y si, por cualquier motivo, no se concreta, la Euroliga cuenta con un plan sólido. Tenemos una visión, un proyecto, una estrategia de ingresos, una estrategia de derechos y marketing; lo tenemos todo. Pero si la NBA desea sentarse a la mesa y explorar una posibilidad conjunta, estamos abiertos y aprovecharíamos al máximo la oportunidad".
